Ogre sighted in Hamstead?

By Mark McIntyre

The latest Follies notebook entry began when heavy steps were heard beyond the boat park as a scarecrow slowly rotated against the wind. The account places the disturbance around Hamstead boat park and surrounding countryside. No named individual or organisation is being presented as a witness; this is a playful, fictional field report inspired by local folklore and landscape. The suggested suspect is the Hamstead Ogre. In the Follies record it is associated with collecting kittens, stomping through fields and unnerving scarecrows. That behaviour gives the report a certain internal logic, even if mythical-creature logic is not yet recognised as a dependable branch of evidence. The location also suits the tale: familiar paths, structures and changing Island light can make an ordinary movement look briefly extraordinary. Professor Follies arrived with notebook, magnifier and emergency biscuits. His most useful observation was a huge muddy heel mark contained three strands of straw and one surprisingly delicate paw print. Nothing proved the creature's presence, although nothing behaved quite well enough to dismiss it either. Local conditions could support a less legendary answer: soft ground, loose farm equipment and a large walker carrying an exceptionally small dog. Professor Follies has not rejected it, but has placed it in the folder marked 'plausible, with reservations'. No emergency or danger is alleged, and the report should not be mistaken for verified local news. Professor Follies has recorded the matter as unresolved rather than impossible. That distinction leaves room for weather, wildlife, local humour and legend to share the same page. If you investigate around Hamstead, look carefully, travel responsibly and remember that the most persuasive clue may still have a very ordinary owner.
